IUCN Nepal has been celebrating Environment Day every year, to renew public commitment towardsthe environment conservation and also help involve social sectors towards channeling environmental values and broadening public support for the cause.

This year too, IUCN Nepal joined hands with Central Zoo of the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) in celebrating the World Environment Day, 2009. Other partners of the celebration were Lalitpur Sub-Metropolitan City and WWF Nepal. The theme of this year was “Your Planet Needs You! Unite to Combat Climate Change”. In order to disseminate the message, a green walk organized in the streets of Patan in the morning. Some 2,000 school children participated in the rally to spread the message loud and clear. The message was that that it’s time for us to change our life styles to conserve nature and the environment around us.

Later the rally turned into a mass meeting and Chief Guest, Member of Constitution Assembly Mr. Rabindra Adhikari, applauded the move of the Central Zoo on banning the plastic bags inside the zoo area and urged everyone to work towards a healthy environment. He then distributed the prizes to the winners of various schools. The Central Zoo had organized various competitions for school children on the occasion of the World Environment Day.

Similarly, IUCN Field Office Dharan also celebrated World Environment Day 2009. A rally was organized to create awareness about climate change among local people along with drawing competitions, flower show and interaction programs. Schools, women groups, CFUGs, local municipality, SEMEN and other stakeholders actively participated in the celebration.
