IUCN Nepal and the Commission on Environmental Economics and Social Policy (CEESP/TILCEPA) today jointly organized a workshop on "Shifting paradigm of protected areas: Towards exploring and understanding Community Conserved Areas (CCAs) in Nepal." The objective of the meeting was to broaden the understanding of CCA and inform the stakeholders about the assessment project being undertaken in South Asia, including Nepal.

Sudeep Jana, Member of Strategic Direction on Governance, Communities, Equity and Livelihood in Relation to Protected Areas (TILCEPA), delivered a presentation highlighting the acceptance and official recognition of CCAs internationally. He said that in recent years many countries are developing new policies and legislations to embrace the full potential for conservation that CCAs can entail.

The workshop, participated by over 25 institutional, commission members and partners, called on people and institutions to recognize indigenous and community conserved areas as powerful conservation systems.

Chair of the workshop, IUCN Regional Councillor Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, said that if we are to truly safeguard the biodiversity, we need to recognize and support indigenous communities. She said that as the issue of CCA has come at a time when Nepal is in transition, we must continue to work on such emerging issues based on the lessons from other countries.

“As recognition means empowering people, we need to redefine communities. We have to look at these issues very closely in relation with conservation and livelihoods,” Dr. Rana added.
